Sink your teeth into the perks of metal-free, tooth-colored fillings
Dentists like Dr. Michelle Janbakhsh have never had more materials to choose from to rebuild broken, damaged teeth. Today’s modern dental materials are indistinguishable from natural teeth regarding appearance, feel, and function. So, BPA- and metal-free products like composite resin are transforming how we perform many common procedures, such as dental fillings to repair cavities. We are excited to offer biocompatible, aesthetically pleasing, tooth-colored fillings using advanced and holistic dentistry techniques at our office in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Why would I need a tooth-colored filling?
Dental fillings are generally appropriate for patients with teeth that have sustained damage due to progressive dental/tooth decay. As decay works through the tooth, it erodes the protective enamel and can result in areas of lost tooth structure. These areas or holes are called “cavities.” We apply fillings to do as their name suggests – fill in the cavity to restore the strength and structure of the affected tooth. A tooth-colored or white filling may be the best option for those looking for a cosmetic option that appears no different from the surrounding tooth or its neighboring teeth. It may also be preferred by individuals concerned about previous sensitivities or reactions to the metals associated with “conventional” silver-colored fillings.
What materials do you use to make the filling?
We use BPA free composites that can also be color-matched to blend perfectly with natural teeth. It does not present any risks of adverse reactions or sensitivities. Ceramic is another material that may be used to achieve a highly natural and aesthetic result. Both of these options are conservative compared to amalgam or silver fillings or crowns. This means that less natural and otherwise healthy tooth structure is removed when securing the filling.
How do you apply these restorations?

A composite filling may be applied and secured directly to the cavity or treatment site. This is known as a direct restoration and is a particularly tissue-preserving option. The material is applied in layers to the tooth after it has been cleaned and any decayed tissue has been removed. We like to think of this process as giving your tooth a fresh start. The filling restores natural strength and stability since the material is hardened and bonded directly to the tooth structure.
Ceramics are indirect restorations. Like inlays, onlays, and crowns, this option is based on your individual case and after thoroughly exploring your options with Dr. Janbakhsh. Once ready, she applies and cements the restoration to the tooth. Of course, all of this is done with your utmost comfort in mind. You won’t feel anything due to our precise application of numbing anesthetic. We are happy to discuss the unique nuances and considerations associated with different materials with you during a consultation.
Why are these fillings a good fit with a holistic or biological dental office?
Not only are these fillings safe, but they preserve the utmost tooth structure. They furthermore promote patient satisfaction because these metal-free materials look like real teeth (no silver color!) and are also strong. In general, they support your overall health and well-being, which aligns with our fundamental principles as a holistic/biological dental care provider.
