Easing jaw pain, improving periodontal health, balancing the bite, supporting a beautiful smile, and more with adult orthodontics

More adults than ever before are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Perhaps their formerly treated teeth have relapsed. Or, their teeth have shifted out of place with the passage of time. Whatever the case may be, Modern Smile Dental lives up to its name with sophisticated orthodontics or alternatives to conventional braces in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Our dentist, Dr. Michelle Janbakhsh, also accounts for the fact that these treatments are about more than supporting straighter teeth and a beautiful smile. They can have a transformative impact on conditions such as periodontal disease, clenching, grinding, or jaw pain.

What alternatives do you offer to braces?

We are a proud provider of Invisalign®. This treatment uses a series of aligners or special appliances to reposition the teeth. When worn as directed in the mouth, they move the teeth gradually, week by week, until your most desirable and healthy smile is staring back at you in the mirror.

How do Invisalign® aligners compare to braces?

Traditionally, braces use a system of metal brackets, wires, and elastics to place pressure on the teeth. This pressure gradually repositions crooked, crowded, and otherwise unevenly spaced teeth. Braces are fixed to the teeth. So they cannot be removed by the patient. The disadvantage of the metal braces, is that they contain nickel and you will be ingesting that while you are wearing the braces. Also having all these metal  brackets or wires, it works as an antenna to absorb the EMF right into the brain. Also, since it is difficult to floss while having metal braces, the chances of getting gum issues or decays after the braces come off, increases. With aligners, you can take them out at any time. Comfortably brush and floss and put it back in the mouth.  They are also made from clear or transparent BPA free plastic, making the aligners very discreet. As an adult, your workmates, bosses, and friends never need to know that you are straightening your teeth. The plastic itself is smooth and flexes for added comfort – no wires or hardware poking against the insides of your mouth!

So, can I really take them out at any time?

Yes, you can. But there is a caveat here. In order for the teeth to be effectively straightened, you must wear each tray as directed. Remember, these aligner trays correspond with different steps in your treatment plan. Failure to wear them properly can delay treatment. Be sure to wear them in the correct order and only remove them before meals and before cleaning your teeth. You should also take the aligners out for regular cleaning to prevent bacterial build-up and keep them stain-free.

How can orthodontics help with TMD pain?

Orthodontics supports a beautiful smile and teeth that are easier to clean, which helps to keep disease at bay. The benefits of orthodontic treatment don’t stop there. Dr. Janbakhsh also takes a special interest in orofacial orthopedics. This discipline accounts for how any time there is an imbalance with one part of the mouth and face, it can affect the whole “system.” So, imbalances with the positioning of the teeth can give rise to muscle strain and put extreme force on these tissues, ligaments, and other structures. Without treatment, you may experience chronic pain and a limited range of motion. These effects can interfere with your ability to chew food comfortably and other basic functions.
